A Message From HSMAI’s Leaders
Over the past two years, the hospitality industry has seen changes and transformation we never thought possible. The pandemic turned our profession upside down, putting us face to face with some of the hardest challenges of our careers, leading many of us to make tough decisions and all of us to accept that how we operate moving forward won’t be the same as we did in the past.
While 2020 was a year no one expected, 2021 allowed us to acknowledge this new normal and approach new challenges with agility, creativity, and innovation. In the midst of evolving COVID-19 variants, ever-changing travel and safety rules and limitations, and the shortage of talent across the industry, we have seen our community come together in inspiring ways that show just how exceptional those in our profession really are. And as travel continues to rebound and we head toward a state of recovery, there will be more opportunities for restoration and reconnection of the community locally and around the world.
In 2020, HSMAI’s primary goal was to support our members with the resources they needed to respond, adapt, and recover during the pandemic. In 2021, we continued upon that goal and expanded it to provide valuable insights based on what we all learned from the previous year. Alongside our volunteer leaders, chapters, partners, sponsors, volunteers, and staff, we’ve garnered many accomplishments because of this, and we’ve highlighted them in this annual report.
For example, in 2021, HSMAI’s organizational membership renewals grew significantly. We launched the Commercial Decisions Digest and continued delivering the Customer Insights newsletter. Participation in our Online Essentials courses and certification program stayed strong, and we took our celebration of the “best of the best” — the Adrian Awards — virtual for the first time. In addition to continuing to gather insights among industry leaders via our roundtable series, we surpassed attendance expectations with our face-to-face events last September and October — our first since the pandemic started.
These are just some of the highlights featured in the 2021 annual report. As we continue onward, we look forward to creating more opportunities for our members to contribute to the hospitality industry in a strong way and to better themselves — personally and professionally — in the process.

Connect with HSMAI
HSMAI recognized industry professionals and great work in hospitality travel marketing through several awards and recognition programs, including the Adrian Awards, Top 25 Minds, Lifetime Achievement, professionals, and an educator of the year.
The year began with announcements of the 2020 class of the HSMAI Top 25 Minds in Hospitality Sales, Marketing, and Revenue Management. These professionals, along with the first class of HSMAI Hospitality Heroes were recognized in conjunction with the annual Adrian Awards. The Adrian Awards Celebration was held virtually for the first time in its 64 year history due to safety concerns around large gatherings at the beginning of 2021 arising from the CVOID 19 Pandemic. Nearly 400 industry and agency professionals took part in the virtual celebrations of the Adrian Awards and Top 25.
Recognition was able to move back to in-person during HSMAI’s Commercial Strategy Week in Dallas at the end of September In conjunction with the ROC Americas event, the 2021 Revenue Professionals of the Year, Revenue Optimization Lifetime Vanguard Honor, and inaugural Revenue Educator of the Year were honored on stage. Chapters shifted back and forth between in person & virtual throughout 2021 depending on conditions across the country and restrictions in place in local markets. Among the highlights of HSMAI chapter activity for the year:
2021 was the year to try something new. Several chapters that typically always held monthly lunches, mixed it up with evening socials, breakfast education sessions, mid-afternoon education and post event social hour.
Chapter boards were able to gain new board leaders and keep their chapters sustainable as the pandemic continued.
Chapters did a fantastic job of seeking out new speakers & topics to their markets to continue engagement and high-quality education for their members, here are a few highlights:
Hawaii: Beyond the Whiteboard featuring Lieutenant Governor Josh Green
Los Angeles: Partnered with HFTP for education sessions & joint Holiday Party
San Diego: The playbook on San Diego’s Sports Tourism Discussion panel including speakers representing San Diego Tourism Authority; Sports Development; Breeder’s Cup Limited; Aztec Stadium; San Diego Bowl Game Association
LA, Oregon & San Diego partnered for virtual session: How Negotiations with Meeting Planners have shifted hoteliers’ tactics.
Central Florida: Partnered with local MPI, NACE & ILEA to throw an incredible in person joint holiday party – talk about teamwork!
Las Vegas: Hosted annual Revenue Conference in person which included 6 different sessions & speakers from all over the United States for a jam-packed day of education.
North Carolina & South Carolina teamed up in 2021 to produce 3 virtual jointly hosted education programs. They had great social media marketing for these events.
Arizona: Kicked off 2021 with Cindy Novotny speaking on Refocus! Recharge! Redefine! AND they were able to host their Annual Chinese Auction over the summer IN PERSON which raised fund to help support the chapter.
Washington DC: “You Attended State of the Industry – Now What” as a follow up to a previous event deep diving into strategic use of the data, additional trends for Q4, budget planning for 2022 and more!
HSMAI’s Organizational Memberships continued strong support for the association and for membership within their companies, with 64 members participating in 2021.

While HSMAI’s curate was not able to be held in person in 2021, it continued to provide great value and engagement through a Global Curate. HSMAI Americas and HSMAI Europe partnered on this live program that focused on helping identify the KPIs that will be most relevant to tracking and achieving success in the post-pandemic hospitality market. Representatives of HSMAI Organizational Member companies in both regions collaborated on brainstorming these metrics.
2021 saw the return to live events for HSMAI’s Commercial Strategy Events as well as executive roundtables. Industry professionals were thrilled to be back in person at HSMAI’s ROC, Marketing Strategy Conference, and Sales Leader Forums. ROC and the Marketing Strategy Conference were part of HSMAI’s first Commercial Strategy Week. The week focused on renewing, rebuilding, and recovering, as hospitality professionals navigated the post-pandemic landscape. The week’s events will reflected the increasing convergence of sales, marketing, revenue optimization, and other commercial functions.
HSMAI also convened commercial executives from 11 brands, 20 management companies, and 10 ownership groups to discuss evolving trends in revenue generation, commercial strategy, and consumer behavior as well as the opportunities to envision a different future to optimize profitability at an executive roundtable in Dallas. Adam Sacks, president of Tourism Economics, gave an opening presentation on the economic outlook for hospitality and travel, expanding on his keynote presentation at HSMAI’s ROC Americas.

In 2021 HSMAI continued to offer three professional certifications, a student certification, and three online certificate courses to provide learning and validation to industry professionals. In 2021, HSMAI congratulated 285 new Certified Revenue Management Executives (CRME) and Certified Hospitality Digital Marketers (CHDM).
We continued to offer both the Individual CHBA (Certified in Hospitality Business Acumen) and the instructor-led classes, both live and virtual. In 2021, 40 people earned the CHBA. We’ve offered the CHBA since 2012, and in 2020 we partnered with Russell Partnership Technology in offering both the group classes and the individual, self-paced, virtual learning as a path to earn the CHBA.
HSMAI also continued to offer its student certification, the CRMA (Certified Revenue Management Analyst) to university students. During the year, 41 students majoring in hospitality earned their CRMA, an important stepping stone to their careers and eventually the CRME certifications.
Our three online, instructor-led, six-week virtual classes in essential learning in hospitality, the Hotel Revenue Optimization Essentials, the Hotel Digital Marketing Essentials, and the Hotel Digital Sales Essentials courses, provided certificates of completion to 194 hospitality professionals. Taught by leading experts in the fields, these certificate classes enabled HSMAI members and non-members to advance their learning and understanding of these complex and ever-changing disciplines.

Our research and education arm, the HSMAI Foundation, distributed $170,000 in grants to nearly 400 hospitality professionals worldwide as of part the COVID Relief Fund. The grants represented a mix of educational services and programs — from HSMAI membership, certification and online education, and more. In addition to launching a new website, the Foundation created a significant amount of content on talent and leadership development topics, including the “State of Hotel Sales, Marketing, and Revenue Optimization Talent: 2020-2021” special report.
We also developed a large hospitality school database including deans and directors, as well as faculty who teach sales, marketing, and revenue optimization, in order to better manage the relationships with these key leaders, and we focused on new leaders in the profession through the Foundation’s launch of the Rising Leader Council grant program. We also headed into 2022 with 10 corporate talent partners, thanks to the new corporate talent partnership model that was conceptualized in 2021.

Global leadership from Europe, the Middle East, AsiaPac and the United States connected on a monthly basis throughout 2021 to determine the various areas where collaboration could occur. Some of the highlights achieved include the following:
A global Curate program focused on key performance indicators was held in May.
HSMAI Foundation sponsored various initiatives, such as a published report on the Chief Human Resources Executive Roundtables hosted in each region in 2020; COVID-19 relief grants distributed to all regions; and a Mindset Digital master class webinar open to all members worldwide.
Three companies opted for the new Global Organizational Membership in 2021: Preferred Hotels, RateGain, and OTA Insights.
Modifications were made to the AsiaPac Academy website by aggregating all online educational programs from all regions.
HSMAI Europe hosted a virtual six-week branding class that was offered to all members worldwide.
HSMAI Middle East hosted their fourth annual ROC Commercial Strategy Conference with 447 registered delegates. Three new executive roundtables were hosted for the first time in the region as well.
All regions agreed to create one Global Distribution Advisory Board in 2022, and a global call for applications was completed.
Partnership proposals for multiple companies were aggregated by Elise Rhinehart for global coordination.
The new edition of the CHDM study guide released in September included attribution to all the subject-matter experts from each region who contributed to the review process.
The process was started with regional Revenue Advisory Boards for the next edition of the CHDM study guide.

Advisory Boards
Complementing the work of HSMAI’s chapters, HSMAI’s advisory boards connect members with common interests across geographic boundaries in the Americas region. Each advisory board guides HSMAI’s strategic direction as it relates to their dedicated subject matter, resulting in face-to-face and virtual education, special resources, insights, and more that are specific to their particular area of expertise.
FUELING SALES
The Sales Advisory Board is demonstrating the value and relevance of the sales function by focusing on its four key priorities, and advocates that all sales leaders make these priorities their own:
Reduce industry wide cost of sales/customer acquisition to improve profitability, and fight commoditization of hospitality services in the purchaser’s mind so that hoteliers are not just selling on price.
Promote innovative recruiting and talent development practices, including career-pathing and leadership development for hospitality salespeople.
Enhance sales force business acumen in order to increase productivity and improve the buying-selling process; improve sales forecasting and pipeline management methodologies; and, encourage the use of technologies that assist these efforts.
Develop efficient sales practices for hotels, including aligning sales with operations, revenue management, and ecommerce, while reducing costs. This includes implementing effective performance measures (e.g., conversion, speed, filling need periods, profitability, etc.) and simplified reward systems that keep salespeople focused on the goals of the overall enterprise.
